Origin of the character

象形。もと「大」と同形で、大人の形。意味のない装飾的な横棒を加えて「夫」の字体となる。甲骨文字では「大」と「夫」の両字は厳密な使い分けがされていなかったが、のちに用法に従って区別するようになった。「成人男子」を意味する漢語｛夫｝を表す字。
