形声。「艸」+音符「枼」。「は」「はっぱ」を意味する漢語｛葉｝を表す字。もと「枼」が｛葉｝を表す字であったが、草冠を加えた。「枼」は葉のついた樹木の象形文字。『説文解字』では「世」+「木」と誤って分析されているが、「世」は「枼」の略字である。
