原字(楷書で「耂」と書かれる部分)は「木」に類似した形を持つ象形文字であるが由来は不明で、様々な説が存在するが定説はない。のち羨符「口」(楷書では「日」)を加えて「者」の字体となる。仮借して助詞の{者}に用いる。
