形声。「隹」+声符「小」。甲骨文字や金文の時代に「小」と書かれていたものが戦国時代で「火(灬)」に訛変した形。本義は{鷦/鳥の一種}で、「火」に訛変した後に「こげる」を意味する漢語{焦}を表す。
