形声。「隹」＋声符「小」。甲骨文字や金文の時代に「小」と書かれていたものが戦国時代で「火(灬)」に訛変した形。本義は｛鷦/鳥の一種｝で、「火」に訛変した後に「こげる」を意味する漢語｛焦｝を表す。
