甲骨文字に見られる原字は、「止」+音符「(⿰子冊)」（「智」の古い異体字）から構成される形声文字。のち「冊」が省略され、「子」が「早」のような形で書かれるようになり「是」の字体となった。「かわぐつ」を意味する漢語｛鞮｝を表す字。のち仮借して「これ」を意味する漢語｛是｝に用いる。
