会意。「匕」+「口」。食事を口に運ぶさまを象る。「味が良い」「うまい」を意味する漢語{旨}を表す字。 「口」は中央に羨筆(装飾的な筆画)を加えて「甘」となり、楷書では「日」の形となった。これは漢字の歴史において非常によく見られる変化である。
