甲骨文字・金文は「林」+「勹」（かがんだ人）+「大」（立った人）、人が生い茂った草木の中に隠れる様子を象る。「しげる」を意味する漢語｛鬱｝を表す字。「爵」の略体を加えて「鬱」となる。
