形声。「虫」 + 声符「凡/*[b]rom/」。 「かぜ」を意味する漢語｛風/*prəm/｝を表す字。もと「鳳」字が｛風｝を表していたが（仮借）、数百年の空白を経て戦国時代に「虫」に従う「風」字が現れた。「虫」に従う理由は、有力な説として以下の２つがある。
