形声。当初の字体「𧴦」（「貝」+音符「𠂈」）に音符「丁」と羨符「八」を加えて「眞（真）」の字体となる。もと「めずらしい」を意味する漢語｛珍｝を表す字。のち仮借して「まこと」「本当」を意味する漢語｛真｝に用いる。
