会意か。「目」と十字型の筆画からなるが、形の由来は不詳。のち仮借して「人々」「たみ」を意味する漢語｛民｝に用いる。字源は後述の通り諸説が有るが不明。『説文解字』などの古字書でも字源の記載がなく、仮借の説明のみがなされていた。
