Origin of the character
形声。原字「⿱五五」は獣肉を掛けるために用いる器具を象る。羨符「口」を加えて「𠵥」の字形となり、「⿱五五」が「五」に類化して「吾」の字形となる。「獣肉を掛ける器具」を意味する漢語｛互｝を表す字。仮借して「われ」を意味する漢語｛吾｝に用いる。
