Origin of the character

「枳」の偏を省略して生まれた字。「口」とは関係がない。仮借して「ただ」を意味する漢語｛只｝に用いる。指事。「木」の枝の部分に○印を加えたもの。「木のえだ」を意味する漢語｛枝｝を表す字。のち「木」と、枝＋○印の部分の筆画が分離し、「枳」の字体となった。さらに「木」を省略することで「只」の字が生まれた。
